an azaleas plant, has curled up brown leaves. should i cut it back even though branches are brittle? or do you think it is dead?

If the leaves and the stems and branches are brittle, it doesn't sound good! Begin by cutting back one of the branches, a few inches at a time, until you see green tissue within the center of the branch. If there is no green tissue, keep cutting back until you find some. If you don't find any, the shrub is dead and should be replaced. Hope there's good news when you begin pruning!
