I have bahia grass. I have neglected the care of it and now I would like to learn how to bring it back to a beautiful carpet of green healthy grass. I have white patches of sand around my front and back yard, lots of bare spot & weeds. Where do I start and how.

Thanks,

Nilsa

You can reseed the bare areas or take sprigs or plugs from healthy areas and plant them in the bare spots. Bahia will green up with adequate water and a little fertilizer. One of the disadvantages of bahiagrass is its tendency to yellow because of iron deficiency. This problem can be overcome by using a complete fertilizer, which contains iron. Apply in amounts as recommended on the label. As for weeds, probably the best approach is to dig them out. Using herbicides on an already stressed lawn can kill out the grass, along with the weeds. I'd begin watering on a regular schedule, digging out the weeds, and feeding early this spring. Your turf should green up quickly. Best wishes with your lawn!
