Start by removing as much of the grass and roots as possible. Then sprinkle a pre-emergent such as Preen over the area (it will prevent any seeds from sprouting). After that, place a weed barrier over the area and cover that with shredded bark, bark chips or several inches of compost. Between the pre-emergent, the weed barrier and the 2-3 inches of mulch, the grassy weeds won't have an opportunity to grow. Bedst wishes with your garden!
