The Q&A Archives: How to keep grass from growing

Question: I recently removed little rocks i placed about 3 years ago around rose garden and applied some roll of weed preventer and last year it was really bad i couldnt even see the rocks. removed all the rocks and want to know the best possible way from keeping grass from growing, i am going to lay down mulch now.thanks

Answer: Start by removing as much of the grass and roots as possible. Then sprinkle a pre-emergent such as Preen over the area (it will prevent any seeds from sprouting). After that, place a weed barrier over the area and cover that with shredded bark, bark chips or several inches of compost. Between the pre-emergent, the weed barrier and the 2-3 inches of mulch, the grassy weeds won't have an opportunity to grow. Bedst wishes with your garden!
