I live in zone 5 (Chicago). For the last several years, my Nikko's have not bloomed because of a late freeze. This year, we are expecing a freeze, and I don't want my buds to freeze. What can I do?

Sometimes all you need to do is cover the plant with a frost blanket or even an old sheet. Usually this temporary protection will keep the flower buds from being killed by frost. Be sure to remove the protective covering when the sun comes out the following morning. Best wishes with your hydrangea!
