I have 2 young red maple trees in my front yard, how do I kill the weeds around the trees without harming the trees?

The safest way to approach the weed problem is to dig them out, roots and all. Any chemical you might use near the trees will certainly translocate through the roots and could kill the tree so keep weed killers away. Dig away an area at least 12 inches in circumferance around the trees. Then, after you have removed all the weeds, place an organic mulch around the trees to suppress future weeds. A 3-4 inch layer of compost or shredded bark will not only suppress weeds but also slow water evaporation. Best wishes with your trees!
