I'd love to plant some summer bulbs, but the last time I did, the squirrels upturned them. Does sprinkling red pepper keep the pesky squirrels away?

Sometimes squirrels are deterred by red pepper flakes, but sometimes they are not. They don't seem to like daffodil bulbs so including them in your bulb bed might be enough to keep them away. If they happen to find a daffodil bulb, they'll quit exploring. But if they find a tulip, or some summer flowering bulbs they'll probably continue digging. I'd stretch some chicken wire or hardware cloth or even some permeable weed control cloth over the freshly planted bed. You can remove it in later, after the ground has compacted and before the bulbs begin to sprout. Best wishes with your bulbs!
