| Actually, I think just the opposite is true. Ever heard of beginners luck? I think first gardens thrive because of all the TLC they receive. Seasoned gardeners tend to ignore their gardens until they develop problems. Mid-March and early April are good times to sow the seeds of vegetables and to set out transplants. Before doing so, prepare your garden bed by incorporating some organic matter. Just spread 4-5 inches of compost, shredded leaves, aged manure or other organic matter over the soil surface and dig it in to a depth of 8-10 inches. Then plant. The organic matter will loosen the soil, provide nutrients to the roots of your plants, help hold moisture and just overall aid the health of your soil. To suppress weeds, lay another 2-3 inches of organic matter over the bare soil after you have planted. Dig this mulch material into the garden bed at the end of the season and add fresh mulch over the top of the bed. Repeat this over a period of a few years and you'll have the best soil on the block.
