I am a commercial landscaper in the Pittsburgh area and I usually start my spring cleanups around mid March. Directly after the cleanup is when I spot seed the customers lawn. Lawns that I spot seed on March 15th take 10 to 14 days to germinate. Lawns spot seeded on April 1st take 5 to 7 days but both come in equally as thick. Grass seed and fertilizer have risen in cost dramatically this year

I'm guessing your question is why the difference in germination times. If so, it has to do with soil temperatures. Although two weeks doesn't sound like a great deal of time, soil temperatures can rise the few degrees required to prompt faster germination.
