Thanks for your reply regarding my question regarding red blotches on my epiphyllums. Can this be a disease because its not something you can rub or scrap off the plant. Its more like freckle-like. Spreading to the tip of the pad, eventually killing it. Again, it occurs only on top of the pad, but the botton is always clean & green. Thanks, Jim

Oh.. that sheds a little more light on the subject! From what you describe it does sound more like a bacterial disease than a scale insect. There's a common disease called Crown Rot. It takes the uppermost leaf or leaves. Thus the name "crown". The remedy is to remove the uppermost leaf or leaves. That should clear up the problem and stop the spread of the disease. Best wishes!
