The Q&A Archives: cactus

Question: I have a large bunny ear cactus which is very unsitely around the base & impossible for me to clean; I am thinking of digging it out and wondered what kind of root ball it would have & if it is necessary to remove the root completely?

Answer: Bunny ear cactus (Opuntia microdasys) will have an extensive root system, especially if it has been in place for several years. If yours is not attractive, cut it down at soil level. It should resprout in a few months and you'll have a brand new plant. Or, cut it down and dig out the majority of the root system to entirely remove the plant from your landscape.
