I try planting grass for Dense shade every Fall but they never seem to take so I have many bare spots. I water them in but by mid-summer they die off.

What is the best grass to use and time of season to plant it here in NJ?

Fescue is the most shade tolerant grass, but even it has problems growing for more than a year or two. I'm afraid you will have to continue to reseed every spring if you want lawn in a densely shaded area. Or, how about growing a groundcover instead? Pachysandra is a deep green and grows in the shade. It is not as nice as grass, but it will be green and you won't have to replace it every spring. Wish I had more encouraging news for you!
