I put fresh mulch over the old much in my flower bed every spring is it necessary?

It is not absolutely necessary to remulch every spring. Mulch helps suppress weeds, slow water evaporation and moderate soil temperatures. It also releases nutrients as it decomposes. I like to dig the old mulch into the soil and then add a fresh layer of mulch each spring. Incorporating the mulch into the soil helps build the soil into good garden loam. Organic rich garden loam helps plants grow to their full potential.
