Do you recommend using heat mats for seed starting? My home is on the coldside. Does Home Depot carry them?

Home Depot does carry heating cables and heat mats for seed starting. As for whether or not they are required, it depends upon the types of seeds your are starting. Warm season vegetables such as tomatoes and peppers prefer warm soil temperatures so a heating mat will make the seeds germinate faster. Most flowers and other vegetable seeds will be happy with room temperature potting soil. Check the backs of the seed packages to see what the optimal seed starting temperatures are for the seeds you are starting and then decide whether or not you're growing the types of seeds that will benefit from warm soils. If so, purchase a heat mat or cable.

Good luck with your seed starting venture!
