growing grass - Knowledgebase Question

I just moved in a house that I am renting and in the back yard there is sand. The grass is growing in sand. However, there are a lot of bare space. hoe can I grow grass in this SAND LOT?

Compost is probably the only practical option for increasing the water holding capacity of the turf area. I suggest adding a few inches and mixing it in as deeply as a rototiller will go. If you can bring in some soil with a more loamy texture that would also be very helpful. Thanks for the question. Please stop in again soon!
