The Q&A Archives: Rhododendron

Question: I have a rhodie, the largest I ever have seen. Last year part of it died, but there is still a small section that is alive. My husband cut the dead part back. What do I do? Is it dead?

Answer: Only time will tell, but a large rhodie probably has an extensive root system so I expect that you will see some new growth later this spring. If not, the shrub may have root rot, which is common in rhodies where soils do not drain well. Hope yours makes it!
