How do you prune a Japanese aralia? Is there a need for pruning the plant in the spring?

Fatsia japonica, the Japanese Aralia, can be cut back hard in the springtime without compromising its health. If you wait until spring to prune, when the plant is poised for new growth, it will regrow quickly and cover your pruning cuts. You can prune it down by one third without harm. Prune back again later in the summer if it is still too large for the area. Best wishes with your fatsia!
