Butterfly bushes can be pruned back as far as you want without harm. Some gardeners cut them down to the ground, others cut them back to about knee level, and still others selectively prune, removing some of the oldest growth completely and randomly pruning individual stems to various heights. Butterfly bushes are such vigorous growers than you can prune as hard as you want and they will respond with lots of healthy new growth each spring.
