The Q&A Archives: Fertilize & seed at same time

Question: I will fertilize in the next week or so, and also have a few bare spots in the lawn. I know that you should wait a while before seeding bare spots after fertilizing. I think the recommended waiting time is 6 weeks. Is there a way to seed the bare spots, and then not apply fertilizer to those areas so that I do not loose 6 weeks of growing time? I live in Morris county NJ. Thanks!

Answer: You should be able to rake the bare spots and reseed now and then broadcast your fertilizer. Most lawn fertilizers are time-release so the majority of the nutrients are released slowly over a period of months. The amount released should not burn the new grass. Best wishes with your lanw!
