The Q&A Archives: Clay

Question: How can one improve one's hard clay lawn to grow anything other than wireweed?

Answer: If your lawn is growing on clay instead of topsoil, you can help improve the situation by renting a core aerator. After running the machine over your yard, leave the plugs to dissolve with rainwater or irrigation water. Spread a thin layer of sand, top soil or peat moss over the entire lawn and water it in. This material will work its way down into the holes left by the aerator and help loosen the soil.

Best wishes with your lawn!
