The Q&A Archives: Clump River Birch

Question: Just purchased clump river birch at HD. Came in plastic pot. Do I remove from pot to plant or cut slits in it or similar??

Answer: Completely remove the nursery pot and plant your clump river birch in a prepared hole. Start by digging a hole slightly deeper and wider than the nursery pot, roughen up the sides and bottom of the hole, then place a small mound or cone of soil at the bottom of the hole so you can drape the roots over it and they fall in a natural way. Make sure the finished soil level is the same so that the tree is planted at the same soil level as it was in the nursery container. Then backfill with soil and tamp down gently to remove air pockets. Water your tree well after planting and remember to water deeply once each week. Your tree should thrive. Enjoy!
