my variegated hydrangea is about 3 ft and woody with buds on the stems. Should I prune it back?

If your shrub were larger, I would say go ahead and prune it now. But at only 3' you can wait until next spring to prune. Your hydrangea will develop flowers on the new growth it produces this season so you should have lots of flowers this year. Next spring you can prune it back to 12-18 inches. Enjoy your hydrangea!
