I live in zone 5, Highland Park, IL. I have a 4'x 4' area next to my front door and want to plant a dwarf Japense maple. It wil be under shade from the next door neighbors pine tree. What types do you reccomend and what can be planted underneath it at ground level for cover? Will Hakone' grass work well?

The best Japanese maples for the site you describe include Crimson Queen, Inaba Shidare Laceleaf, Tamukeyama Laceleaf and Garnet Laceleaf Japanese Maple. Either Hakone grass or lemon thyme make great groundcovers beneath Japanese maples. Best wishes with your new tree!
