The Q&A Archives: pruning

Question: How far back can I prun a weeping cheery tree? It has out grown it's space.

Answer: The general guideline for reducing the size of a tree or shrubs is to never remove more than one third of the live material in any one pruning session. So, you can safely cut it back by one third now. If that won't be enough to reduce the size as much as you'd like, plan on taking 2-3 years to complete the pruning process, taking no more than a third of the plant in each annual pruning session.
