I would like to put hanging baskets on my front porch, but that area gets full sun in the afternoon. Is there a flowering plant that would grow in this environment?

Some good choices are purslane and moss rose, Blue Daze (Evolvulus), dwarf Zinnias (especially narrow leaf zinnia), Calibrachoa, Batfaced Cuphea, Ornamental Sweet Potato Vine, Osteospermum, Scaevola (Fan flower), Setcreasea (Purple Heart), and Verbena. You can also plant sun loving petunias and nasturtiums in your hanging baskets. Best wishes with your garden!
