| Either there is too much shade and the grass can't root properly, or your soil is compacted and wet and the grass cannot root. If shade is not an issue, try aerating your lawn (rent or borrow a core aerator). After removing the plugs of soil and grass with the aerator, spread a thin layer of sand or compost over the top of the lawn. As the plugs dissolve in the rain or water from the hose and the sand or compost is washed into the holes made by the aerator, your soil will be less compacted and easier for the grass roots to explore. You can reseed the entire lawn to bring it back to life. |
