I like to use compost around the plants in my vegetable garden to help suppress weeds and slow water evaporation. Then, at the end of the growing season I dig it into the soil and add a fresh layer of mulch. Digging it in to the soil every year helps enrich the soil and turn it into healthy garden loam and therefore better vegetable yield. Good luck with your garden!
