I am tired of fighting weeds in my garden. I have tried straw and mulch. The straw created more weeds than it blocked and the mulch has to be laid on pretty heavy to be effective. Can I put a layer of newspaper under the mulch or straw. I am not sure if the ink from the newsprint is hazardous for consuming the vegetables I use from the garden.

A thick layer of newpapers will suppress weeds and the ink used in newspapers is soy based so it should not cause a problem with your veggies as it decomposes. I think newspapers and even cardboard make excellent mulches for veggie gardens. Hope you have a bountiful harvest!
