| I have planted this gorgeous sandwort in an area with full sun; I am keeping it well watered and it looks very healthy...even has unopened blooms all over it. But they won't open. They appear to be drying up on the plant before they ever open. When I bought the sandwort, it had open blooms on it. Please tell me anything you know that may help me help the plant. |
| Your sandwort is Caryophyllaceae, a member of the 'pinks' or dianthus family. Sounds as though you've planted it properly and it's well-maintained, so the only explanation for the bud rot is a disease called fusarium. Usually what happens when sandwort is infected with fusarium is that the blossom buds form, but they turn brown before opening. You might try removing all of the flower buds now, and keeping those that turn brown cut off, as well, during the season. Since this is a fungus, if you remove the affected plant parts, you may help stop it from spreading. Leave any flower buds that remain green, and any flowers that actually open. Perhaps with the above treatment, you'll finally be able to enjoy your gorgeous sandwort. |
