I have had candytuft growing beautifully in my front garden. There were about 8 of 12 plants that died over the winter. They were about 5 years old and had been trimed they got so big. After a mild winter in MD. they are dead. What went wrong?

You got a lot of mileage out of your 5 year old candytufts! They typically only last 2-3 years. After that time the lower stems become woody and if cut back they are incapable of generating any new green shoots. I would start over with new plants. I hope you get another 5 years out of them!
