I STARTED GROWING SPINICH FROM SEEDS FOR THE FIRST TIME AND IT HAS A WHITE/YELLOW POSDER ON THE DIRT THAT IS SPREADING TO MY OTHER SEEDLINGS IN THE PEAT POT GARDEN KIT I PRCHASED. WHAT IS IT, HOW DO I GET RID OF IT AND HAS IT RUINED MY PLANTS? I ALSO NOTICED ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE PEAT POTS THERE IS SOME GREEN MOLD. IS THIS FROM OVER WATERING? |
The fungus is growing on the soil surface and the outsides of the peat pots because you are keeping them too wet and air circulation is poor. You can slow or stop this growth by setting a small fan near the plants and letting it blow gently on the plants. If you are using a seed starting kit, it will have a cover that you set over the flats or pots to keep moisture in. Once the seeds germinate and the plants start to grow you need to remove the plastic cover so there is good air circulation all around the plants. Using a fan will help dry things out and the mold and fungus will stop growing. You can still plant your spinach outdoors, peat pots and all and the fungus won't hurt the plants at all. |
