The Q&A Archives: shaded areas of yard

Question: a large sectio of the yard is shaded and there is no grass in large sections - what seed do I use for grass to grow in these areas?

Answer: Grass doesn't grow well in the shade so you will need to reseed every few years so you might want to consider planting groundcover plants instead. If you really want lawn in those areas, choose a grass seed mixture especially formulated for shady areas - one that contains tall fescue, which is the most shade tolerant of all. Good luck with your garden
