What is the best mower height for cutting St Augustine grass? Many of the pro's in my neighborhood seem to cut it very high. I live in Clermont FL near Orlando. But, my max mower cutting height is 3 1/2 inches. Should I shop for another lawn tractor? |
I would only recommend you shop for another lawn tractor if you wanted to donate your old one to me! Just kidding. St. Augustine can be mowed at various heights, depending upon growing environment and your willingness to mow. I think the pros mow it high so they don't have to mow as often. The University of Florida has this to say: "Mowing heights may range from 1 to 3 inches depending on the frequency of mowing and the degree of shade present. At mowing heights below two inches, St. Augustine grass should be mowed every five days during late spring and summer. At a 2 1/2 inch mowing height, a 7-10 mowing schedule is adequate. Above 2 1/2 inches, St. Augustine grass should be mowed at 10 to 14 day intervals. In moderate to dense shade, St. Augustine grass should be mowed at about 3 inches at 10 day intervals." Doesn't sound to me as though there is any reason to get that new lawn tractor. Best wishes with your lawn! |
