The weather is harsh out here in Watkins-LOTS of strong winds. Our soil is a mix of sand and Clay. We have lost MANY trees in the 5 yrs we've been here. We know the proper height to plant them, and we add compost to the soil as we plant them. We just keep losing them. HELP!!!

How disappointing to be doing everything right and still have your trees die. My suggestion is to plant native trees. They are more adaptable to the soil and growing conditions that your landscape provides and are tough enough to tolerate the wind and weather. Here' a publication from Colorado State University listing trees native to Colorado along with other helpful growing tips:

Hope you find just the right trees for your landscape!
