I bought 2 pygmy date palms from home depot and my yard man told me they would not survive the winter here in SC----why were they sold at home depot if the winlters are too cold-they've been planted and were VERY heavy so to remove and take back would be a big process

Pygmy date palms are hardy to about 28F degrees. If they are planted in protected areas where buildings will keep cold winds from blasting them, they will be fine. If your landscape regularly suffers from frost damage, Pygmy date palms may not be a good choice. So, the bottom line is that they will grow in your area, providing they are given protection from prolonged freezing temperatures.
