The Q&A Archives: Best plants for a hill

Question: We bought our home this will be our 2nd summer here and in the front yard there is a hill that goes up to the road and mail box. We would like to do something with it to make it so we do not have to use the weedeater on it. What kind of landscaping would you suggest? Also it is a very busy road and alot of road noise would also like to cut out some of that in the front yard.

Answer: You may want to plant a row of dense hedges at the top of the hill. Arborvitaes are often used in situations such as you describe but you may find other hedges you like better. If terracing the slope is not an option, how about planting a nice ground cover and then planting small shrubs or groups of tall perennials in spots throughout the slope to add some interest?
