| I have about 20 poplar trees that are about 7 years old. In the last 2 to 3 years they have begun to sprout a number of volunteer shoots around their bases. I would like to know if there is a way to get rid of these without damaging the main tree. I have cut them off in the past but I wonder if there is a better solution. |
| Poplars have a reputation for freely suckering. If your trees are adjacent to lawn or garden beds, you can keep the shoots down with a lawn mower or weed wacker. The roots of the trees will seek water, which is what you're supplying when you water your lawn or flower beds. Poplars are great trees if they're planted away from cultivated areas. Your experience with the suckers is fairly standard--just keep them cut down unless you want a new grove of trees wherever the shoots are emerging. |
