If you have started fertilizer for your new lawn you will want to mix it into the soil prior to broadcasting the seeds. So apply the starter fertilizer to the bare soil and dig or rototil it in. Rake the soil level and broadcast your seeds, then cover the seeds with a thin layer of compost, peat moss or straw. Then water everything down well and keep it moist, even if you have to water several times a day. Depending upon weather, the seeds should germinate in 10-14 days.

You can make your first mowing when the grass is about 3" tall. Mow and water regularly. You can fertilize again in June and in September to help your turf grow nice and thick.

The product Sevin will kill ants and beetles but it will also kill honey bees so use it with caution and only if absolutely necessary.

As for your hostas, the best way to keep slugs and snails from feeding on them is to use iron based products such as Sluggo. You can sprinkle these pellets around your hostas before they sprout and the slugs and snails will not feed on your plants.
