The Q&A Archives: Vegi plants in 5 gal buckets

Question: I have planted tomatoe and pepper plants in 5 gallon buckets and have they in a screened in area so the animals won't eat the plants. Will they be polinated without the use of insects or bees?

Answer: Your plants need the benefit of pollinating insects, or you can do the pollination yourself. Sometimes all you need to do is sharply tap the stem with the opened flowers to transfer pollen - other times it is best to visit each opened flower with a small artist's paintbrush. Try it both ways and see what happens. Or, take your plants outdoors during the day when the flowers are open and take them back to your screened area in the evening. This way visiting insects can do their jobs. Good luck with your plants.
