The Q&A Archives: Foundation planting

Question: I want to plant shrubs on the South side of my house,Zone5. Equal sun/shade. No flowers, but there is a septic system on one end. What can I plant that won't bother the foundation or septic?

Answer: Small shrubs usually have small, shallow root systems. Boxwood or junipers are small and shouldn't cause problems with a nearby septic system. Pieris, although it does flower, is evergreen and will grow well in the area, too. It grows upwards of 5-6' so it will need occasional pruning to keep it smaller.
