My pot Fig Tree is 5 yrs old. Should I put it in the ground now and what is the care of this healthy tree. We get small figs when it produces. Where should we plant it in regards to sun/shade here in FL. I know that in the Winter that we should cover it. Does it need special dirt to go in the ground?

While you can plant your fig tree in the ground, there are many, many reports of poor growth due to soil type and nematode problems in Florida landscapes. I'd hate to see your healthy tree decline because you planted it in the ground. You can either keep it in a container, or build a raised bed which you fill with topsoil and plant it there. If you decide to put it in the ground even with these cautions, be sure to dig lots of compost or other organic matter into your sandy soil to help the roots establish themselves. Good luck with your fig tree!
