I'm planning my very first garden and like exotic, colorful plants. What do you suggest in the way of plants - especially flowers - for a zone 5 "beginner?"

I'd suggest a mix of annuals and perennials, especially this first year. The perennials take a year or two to get established and begin flowering, so the annual flowers will give you color this summer. For full sun, here are a few suggestions (there are so many to choose from!)

Perennials: Achillea, columbine, delphinium, hardy hibiscus, poppies

Annuals: gazania, calendula, portulaca, salvia 'Flare', nasturtium, sunflowers, zinnias

I hope this helps you get started!
