I was thinking of putting up a apple tree in southern Tucson but not sure if it would survive |
As a matter of fact, you can grow apples in Tucson. You'll want to plant low-chill varieties such as Anna, Dorset Golden, Fuji, Fuji Red or Granny Smith. You need two different apple trees for a good set of apples. Anna needs a pollinator such as Dorset Golden and ripens in late June. Dorsett Golden ripens in mid June to early July. Fuji and Fuji Red ripens in September. Granny Smith is a green apple that ripens August to September. If you are anywhere near the Westward Look Resort, stop in and ask to visit the Chef's garden. You'll find a variety of apple trees in the garden, along with lots of other interesting fruit and vegetables. Enjoy! |
