I recently purchased a Southern Magnolia tree,I think it is a grandifolia. The leaves are dark green on the top side and underneath they are brown. The front of my yard is facing SE and recieves full sun most of the day. My right side of the yard is narrower and receives sun in a.m. and shade in p.m.. The backyrd is large and receives mostly full sun. Where would you suggest planting?

Full sun is best for your new magnolia tree so plant it where it can grow to its fullest potential without being crowded by buildings or fences. Sounds as though your backyard is your largest planting site so plant it there and enjoy!
