I am making a border around the side of my house and want to plant a few perennials in the mulch border. I would like the plants or flowers to maintain some color during the winter months. Since my border is not going to be very big I was only want to plant one plant for every few feet. Could you give me any ideas for what perennials to plant? I live in illinois.

There are very few plants that will provide winter color in Illinois but you might consider planting ornamental grasses along your border. Most remain green until the first frost but their spiky flower heads persist all winter long, provinding some winter interest in the garden.
