The Q&A Archives: What to add to garden soil

Question: What is the best stuff to add to the soil in a vegetable garden in the spring?

Answer: Organic matter of nearly any kind will enrich your soil and help it drain well. Use whatever is locally available: compost, aged manure, leaf mold or straw (don't use hay because it's full of weed seeds). Spread a 4-5 inch layer over the soil surface and dig it in to a depth of 8-10 inches. Best wishes with your garden!
