Hi. I live in Virginia and I'd like to some help determining which plants would be best suited for my south facing balcony. I'd like at least two that are large (to provide privacy) and then maybe some pretty, flowering ones that add color. I am also interested in growing herbs like Basil and maybe a tomato plant. Do you have some recommendations?

Lots of shrubs will grow in containers. For privacy, consider Nandina (Heavenly Bamboo), Glossy Abelia (Abelia x grandiflora), Rose-of-Sharon (Hibiscus syriacus), Virginia Sweetspire (Itea virginica), Purple Beautyberry (Callicarpa dichotoma), Carolina Allspice (Calycanthus floridus) and Summersweet (Clethra alnifolia). Most flower in the spring and summer. Any herb will grow in full sun, as will tomatoes so choose your favorite varieties and get planting! Enjoy your garden!
