Impatiens are great for shady gardens, but there are lots and lots of other choices. Try begonia, wishbone flower (Torenia fournieri), peace lily (Spathiphyllum), amethyst flower (Browallia), Lenten rose (Helleborus orientalis), periwinkle (Vinca minor), 'Big Blue' liriope (Liriope muscari 'Big Blue'), golden star (Chrysogonum virginianum), caladium, coleus, 'Mr. Goldstrike' Japanese aucuba (Aucuba japonica 'Mr. Goldstrike'), Plum Passion' nandina (Nandina domestica 'Monum', variegated Japanese sedge (Carex hachijoensis 'Evergold'), winter daphne (Daphne odora), tea olive (Osmanthus fragrans), lobelia, or hardy ferns. Hope these suggestions help you develop a colorful shade garden!
