I'm a first time gardener and I'm looking for annuals that have some height to them, starting with 12 inches and higher. Could you recommend some by name?

Well, of course you have sunflowers, which range from 16 inches to 15 feet tall! Here are some others (height varies with particular varieties): celosia (30"), centauria (3-4 feet), cleome (4 feet), cosmos (2-4 feet), strawflower (14" to 4 feet), salvia (14-20") tithonia (3-6 feet), snapdragon (16" to 4 feet), zinnia (10" to 2 1/2 feet). Hope this gets you started!
