The best way to prepare the soil is to first dig out any weeds or other vegetation and then spread a 4-5 inch layer of organic matter over the top of the bed and dig it in to a depth of 8-10 inches (the depth of a shovel blade). Use compost, aged manure, shredded leaves or any other organic matter available in your area. After amending the soil with organic matter, rake it smooth and plant. Best wishes with your herbs and vegetables!
