The Q&A Archives: Budget Flowers for Bright Sun and Shade

Question: I would like to plant flowers in a small space underneath my garage eaves. The overhang is 16" and receives morning sun. The space is only 24" x 24". We would also like to do something on the other side of the garage however it would receive hot afternoon sunlight. We'd like something colorful and most importantly inexpensive. Bob Fisher Creston,IA

Answer: On the side of the garage that receives morning sun, you could plant impatiens, violas, or bleeding heart. These plants tolerate lower levels of light. On the hot side of the garage, you could plant marigolds, snapdragons, zinnias or any other plant that likes full sun.
